The Xinjiang Key Laboratory of Desert Meteorology and Sandstorm is the only key laboratory in China specializing in sandstorm research. This laboratory integrates field observation networks and indoor experimental platforms to comprehensively conduct research on desert meteorology and sandstorms.
Laboratory Positioning:
Centered on national strategic needs and addressing critical challenges in Xinjiang’s disaster prevention and mitigation, as well as frontier issues in desert meteorology, Reveal the mechanisms of land-atmosphere interactions in deserts and their impact on regional weather and climate; Conduct research on sandstorm processes and disaster-causing mechanisms to improve forecasting and early warning capabilities for sand-dust hazards; Develop new technologies for desert meteorological environment detection and promote their application in ecological civilization construction; Cultivate national-level innovative research teams in desert meteorology and enhance original research capabilities in desert atmospheric science; Dedicate efforts to build an internationally influential key laboratory for sandstorm research, supporting meteorological disaster prevention in Northwest China’s arid regions and providing scientific and technological backing for high-quality meteorological services in the "Belt and Road" initiative and ecological civilization construction.
Research Directions: Land-atmosphere interactions in deserts, desert meteorological environment detection technology, sandstorm processes and disaster warning.
After years of development, the Xinjiang Key Laboratory of Desert Meteorology and Sandstorm has grown steadily, with diverse talents emerging continuously, forming a cohesive, hardworking, and rigorous research team. Currently, the laboratory has 76 personnel, including 31 fixed members and 6 visiting researchers. Among the fixed members, 24 hold senior professional titles, with 3 dedicated technical staff and 3 management staff. In recent years, the laboratory has undertaken over 130 research projects, including 8 national-level projects and 31 provincial/ministerial-level projects. It has published 102 papers, 77 of which are SCI/SCIE-indexed, with 12 papers appearing in renowned domestic and international journals such as ESSD, EST, ACP, JGR, and JCP.
