Resolved measurement challenges in separating photosynthetic carbon fixation from soil respiration in biological soil crusts (BSCs). Quantified impacts of cold/warm season precipitation on BSC photosynthetic productivity. Revealed coupling mechanisms of moisture-temperature-light factors on BSC photosynthesis across succession stages. Confirmed carbon sink function of Gurbantunggut Desert BSCs during cold seasons (Nov-Apr) and carbon source during warm seasons (May-Oct).
