Desert Meteorology Institute makes progress in convective and stratiform precipitation characterization in Xinjiang based on satellite-based instrument observations
The microphysical study of cloud precipitation over Xinjiang is constrained by the observation means due to the spatial distribution of precipitation and its inhomogeneity caused by its complex subsurface. The Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) satellite carries a dual-frequency precipitation radar (DPR), which not only improves the three-dimensional observation of strong and weak precipitation, but also provides effective observation of alpine mountains.

Progress in spring precipitation variation characteristics in the Tarim Basin
The Tarim Basin is located in the extreme arid region of northwestern China, where wind-sand disasters are severe and the ecological environment is fragile. In recent years, frequent extreme precipitation events in this region have attracted widespread attention. Therefore, studying the evolution law of precipitation in the Tarim Basin of southern Xinjiang is of great significance for improving the accuracy of regional climate prediction and guiding local agricultural and animal husbandry production, as well as disaster prevention and mitigation.

Progress in Characterizing Spring Snowmelt Flood Disasters in Altay, Northwest China by Research Team at Institute of Desert Meteorology, CMA
Flood disasters rank among the most frequent and destructive natural hazards globally. Under the influence of global climate change, the frequency, intensity, and impacts of spring snowmelt flood disasters have undergone significant alterations. The Altay region in Xinjiang is a high-incidence area for spring snowmelt floods, where such events exert extensive impacts on ecosystems, regional economic development, agro-pastoral production, and residents' livelihoods. Based on disaster data from spring snowmelt flood events in Altay (1984–2018), this study analyzes: 1) Spatio-temporal distribution characteristics of disaster-causing snowmelt floods. 2) Atmospheric circulation and thermodynamic conditions driving warming-type snowmelt floods. The findings provide critical references for flood prevention strategies in this region.

The Desert Meteorological Research Institute has made progress in studying the effects of extreme climate on radial growth of trees in the Greater Hinggan Mountains
Forest ecosystems are highly sensitive to global climate change, and the increasing frequency of extreme climate events poses significant challenges to tree growth and forest sustainability. As a vital ecological barrier in Northeast China, the Daxing'anling Mountains have drawn considerable attention regarding how their forest ecosystems respond to extreme climate conditions. Recently, the tree-ring research team at the Desert Meteorology Institute conducted a comprehensive study on the radial growth responses of Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica and Larix gmelinii to extreme climate events in the northern Daxing'anling region, providing critical scientific insights for adaptive forest management.
